The oil .pollution,resulting from the "AMOCO CADIZ" tanker spill on the Brittany coast of North Finistere-has affected a very large section of the western Channel, limited for the period covering March 30 to April 18 to the west by the 5°W meridian, to the east by the St-Brieuc Bay, to the north by the 49°20' parallel. The contents of hydrocarbons observed in sea water at different levels show that the whole of water column is contaminated by hy­drocarbons and indicate very probably the pollution of the sedimentary phase in the areas, hited by the drifting sheets. First results about distribution and changes of biomass (dry weight and total soluble proteins), physiology (amylase, trypsin) and faunistic composition of zooplankton are reported for the two months period following the spill of AMOCO CADIZ on the Britany Northern coast. A shortage of biomass in the aber area is attributed to hydrocarbons. The low level of the mean value of biomasse on the North coasts, and the pecularities of estuarine station of the Lannion bay and of Trieux area are reported and discussed. Specific objectives were to observe obviously oiled, dead, or moribund organisms on contaminated beaches, and to conduct a limited examination of the structure and composition of benthic communities considered at risk to impact. Results reflecting these objectives are discussed for a variety of habitats. During the cruises "SUROIT 1", "SUROIT 3" and "THALIA 1", many analyses of dissolved oxygen and chlorophyll have been carried out in order to ascertain some effects of oil spill of "AMOCO CADIZ" on oxygen concentrations and phytoplancton behaviour. These first results show an under-saturation of oxygen, four weeks after stranding, in sea-water standing between 10 to 20 milles eastward of "AMOCO CADIZ". These data allow to do some considerations about oxydation of hydrocarbons in sea-water. In estuaries, especially Aber Wrac'h, one of the most polluted, the analyses do not show obvious anomaly one month after oil spill. Quantitative results on chlorophyll "a" and phaeopigments don't seem to show any noticeable disturbance, neither off, nor near the coast,...
